The Round of 32 saved some of its biggest twists for June 29, with three knockout ties in Houston and Monterrey producing two penalty shootouts and one of the tournament's most seismic upsets.
Paraguay Stun Four-Time Champions Germany
The result of the day, arguably of the tournament so far, came as Paraguay knocked out Germany on penalties following a 1-1 draw. Julio Enciso headed Paraguay in front from a Matias Galarza cross before Kai Havertz leveled early in the second half with a glancing header from a Florian Wirtz delivery. Germany thought they had snatched it in extra time when Jonathan Tah headed home, only for the goal to be ruled out on VAR review for a foul in the build-up. It set up a shootout that swung wildly: Havertz's opening effort was saved, misses followed at both ends, and it was substitute Jose Canale who kept his nerve to send Paraguay through 4-3. For Germany, ranked 10th in the world against 41st-ranked Paraguay, it is a first-ever World Cup penalty shootout defeat and their earliest exit since failing to defend their crown after the 2014 triumph. Havertz could barely process it afterwards, admitting he felt lost for words at a second World Cup ending in heartbreak. Paraguay now face France in the Round of 16.
Late Drama for Brazil, Shootout Success for Morocco
Brazil needed until the fifth minute of stoppage time to see off a spirited Japan in Houston. Kaishu Sano had given Japan a surprise lead in the 29th minute, latching onto space in behind the Brazilian defense, before Casemiro headed home the equalizer from a cross just after half-time. Substitute Gabriel Martinelli, on for less than half an hour, settled it in the dying seconds, curling home after being played through by Bruno Guimaraes. Japan's goalkeeper Zion Suzuki was outstanding throughout, denying Vinicius Junior among others, but it was not enough to prevent a third straight World Cup knockout exit for Japan after leading in the game. Brazil advance to face Norway in the Round of 16. In Monterrey, Netherlands and Morocco needed penalties of their own to be separated after a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes - Cody Gakpo's second-half strike cancelled out by a stoppage-time Issa Diop header - and a goalkeeping masterclass from Bart Verbruggen in extra time. Morocco held their nerve in the shootout, winning 3-2 with Ismael Saibari converting the decisive kick, and set up a delicious Round of 16 assignment against co-hosts Canada in Houston.
Looking Ahead
The knockout rounds are living up to their billing, and the bracket now reads like a tournament with no shortage of romance left in it. Paraguay's stunning run continues against France, Brazil will have to navigate a red-hot Norway side, and Morocco's shootout heroes head into a heavyweight clash with Canada on home soil. If June 29 is anything to go by, nobody left in this competition can be considered safe.
