Erling Haaland scored twice in the final 11 minutes to send Norway into their first World Cup quarter-final in 28 years, stunning five-time champions Brazil 2-1 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The game was goalless and tense for long periods, with Orjan Nyland saving Bruno Guimaraes' 14th-minute penalty for Brazil and then denying Vinicius Junior at his near post before half-time. Martin Odegaard also had a low effort well saved by Alisson Becker as chances were traded but the scoreline stayed level into the closing stages.

Haaland broke the deadlock in the 79th minute, heading in Andreas Schjelderup's cross, before doubling his and Norway's tally with a low, long-range drive that found the corner. The goals took his tournament tally to seven, level with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe in the race for the Golden Boot. Neymar converted a stoppage-time penalty to give the scoreline a respectable look, but it was merely consolation as Norway held on.

The result marked a historic achievement for Stale Solbakken's side, who reached the last eight for the first time and extended their unbeaten record against Brazil, now unbeaten in five meetings with the Selecao.
