USA 1-4 Belgium: De Ketelaere brace ends co-hosts' World Cup run

The United States' World Cup ended in disappointment as Belgium ran out comfortable 4-1 winners in the Round of 16 at Seattle Stadium, becoming the third and final co-host nation to be eliminated from the tournament.

Charles de Ketelaere put Belgium ahead inside nine minutes, tapping in Nicolas Raskin's cross, before Malik Tillman levelled for the Americans with a direct free kick that deflected in off a Belgian defender's head. The lead was short-lived, however, as de Ketelaere restored Belgium's advantage two minutes later, heading in a Leandro Trossard delivery to make it 2-1 at the break.

The game was put out of reach in the second half when a goalkeeping error from Matt Freese allowed Hans Vanaken to make it 3-1. Substitute Sebastian Berhalter had a chance to give the USA hope late on but fired wide, and Belgium had the final word deep into stoppage time when Romelu Lukaku converted a Vanaken assist to complete the scoring.

Weston McKennie and Tillman were both booked for the USA, whose exit ended Mauricio Pochettino's bid to lead the co-hosts to their first quarter-final since 2002. Tillman's free-kick strike was his second goal of the tournament from a direct free kick.
