Argentina 3-2 Egypt: Enzo Fernandez completes stunning stoppage-time comeback

Defending champions Argentina produced one of the great World Cup comebacks, overturning a two-goal deficit to beat Egypt 3-2 with a stoppage-time winner in Atlanta.

Egypt took a shock 15th-minute lead when Yasser Ibrahim headed in from Marwan Attia's cross, and things got worse for Argentina when Lionel Messi had a first-half penalty saved by goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir. Egypt doubled their advantage in the 67th minute through Mostafa Zico, who broke on the counter-attack in a move involving Mohamed Salah. Zico thought he had a second soon after, but the goal was ruled out by VAR for a foul on Lisandro Martinez in the build-up.

With the game seemingly slipping away, Argentina roared back. Cristian Romero headed in from a Messi cross in the 79th minute to halve the deficit, and Messi himself levelled four minutes later with a first-time strike off the underside of the crossbar for his eighth goal of the tournament. Deep into stoppage time, Enzo Fernandez completed the turnaround, heading home a Lautaro Martinez cross to send Argentina through 3-2.

The result keeps alive Argentina's defence of the title they won in Qatar in 2022, while Egypt's run ends at the last-16 stage despite a performance that had them on the brink of a historic upset.
