Algeria 3–3 Austria: Kalajdžić's last-gasp header denies Desert Foxes in Group J thriller

Algeria and Austria played out a breathless 3–3 draw at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on 28 June 2026, with both sides advancing from Group J in one of the tournament's most dramatic finales. Marko Arnautović gave Austria the lead on 28 minutes, but Rafik Belghali's strike just before half-time levelled the contest at 1–1 at the break.

Marcel Sabitzer restored Austria's advantage on 55 minutes, only for Riyad Mahrez to equalise five minutes later. Algeria then appeared to have won it when Mahrez completed a stunning late brace in the 90+3rd minute, sending the Algerian supporters into raptures.

However, substitute Saša Kalajdžić had other ideas, heading home with virtually the last touch of the game in the 90+6th minute to snatch a remarkable equaliser for Austria. The draw saw Austria claim second place in Group J on goal difference, with Algeria also progressing to the knockout round.
