Croatia 2–1 Ghana: Vlašić header seals knockout-stage spot for Croatians

Croatia secured their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Ghana in Group L at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Petar Sučić opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a long-range rocket from 25 yards — assisted by Mateo Kovačić — to give Croatia a deserved first-half lead after Nikola Vlašić had hit the post in the 17th minute.

Ghana emerged from the break with greater intent and were rewarded when Derrick Luckassen equalised in the 73rd minute, volleying home from Ernest Nuamah's free kick. The goal initially appeared to be ruled out for offside but was confirmed after a VAR review, sending Ghana's supporters into a frenzy.

Croatia's experience proved decisive, however. Luka Modrić delivered a pinpoint corner in the 83rd minute that Vlašić met with a precise header to restore Croatia's lead and clinch all three points. The win placed Croatia second in Group L behind England, while Ghana — despite the defeat — advanced from the group stage for the first time since 2010.
