Germany 1-1 Paraguay (3-4 pens): Canale seals one of the tournament's biggest upsets

Paraguay pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 World Cup, eliminating four-time champions Germany on penalties after a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes in Foxborough. Julio Enciso headed Paraguay into the lead in the 42nd minute, rising to meet a precision cross from Galarza and looping a header past Manuel Neuer against the run of play — Paraguay's first-ever goal in a World Cup knockout match. Kai Havertz leveled for Germany in the second half, finishing from a Florian Wirtz cross.

The game swung late in extra time when Jonathan Tah powered home a header from a corner, only for the goal to be ruled out after a VAR review found Waldemar Anton had fouled goalkeeper Orlando Gill as the ball was delivered into the box. Neither side could find a winner, sending the last-32 tie to penalties.

In the shootout, Germany missed three of their six kicks. Havertz saw his opening effort saved by Gill, Nick Woltemade also had his stopped, and Jonathan Tah blazed his sudden-death attempt over the crossbar. Paraguay converted four of their five attempts, with only Toni Sanabria missing, before Jose Canale stepped up to score the winning penalty and send Paraguay through 4-3 on kicks.

The result marked Germany's first-ever World Cup penalty shootout defeat. Manager Julian Nagelsmann said he was ready to continue in the role if the federation wanted him to, while Havertz apologized to fans, saying his second World Cup had again ended in disappointment.
