France 3-0 Sweden: Mbappe brace and Olise brilliance send Les Bleus into last 16

France produced a dominant display to beat Sweden 3-0 in the World Cup round of 32 at New York-New Jersey Stadium, with Kylian Mbappe scoring twice either side of a Bradley Barcola strike. Mbappe broke the deadlock right on the stroke of half-time, finishing from an Ousmane Dembele assist to give France the lead.

Barcola doubled the advantage in the 53rd minute, converting a through ball from Michael Olise, before Mbappe added his second and France's third in the 74th minute, again teed up by Olise. Sweden managed only two shots on target all game as France dominated with an expected-goals tally of 3.17 to their opponents' 0.67.

Mbappe's brace took his tournament tally to six goals, level with Lionel Messi at the top of the Golden Boot race, and gave him nine goals in nine career World Cup knockout matches — the most of any player in the competition's knockout-stage history. Olise's two assists took his tournament total to five, the most by any player at a single World Cup since Germany's Thomas Hassler in 1994.

Manager Didier Deschamps, who returned to the touchline following a personal loss, saw his side advance to face Paraguay in the round of 16 in Philadelphia, while Sweden suffered their earliest World Cup exit since 1990.
