Argentina survived a huge scare from World Cup debutants Cape Verde, needing extra time to escape Hard Rock Stadium in Miami with a 3-2 win in the Round of 32. Lionel Messi broke the deadlock in the 29th minute, latching onto a lofted pass from Lisandro Martinez to finish into the roof of the net for his 20th career World Cup goal, extending his own all-time record.

Cape Verde, the smallest nation ever to reach a World Cup, refused to fold and drew level through Deroy Duarte in the 59th minute, sending the match into a tense final stretch of normal time. Lisandro Martinez restored Argentina's lead early in extra time, converting in the 92nd minute, only for Sidny Lopes Cabral to produce a stunning equalizer in the 103rd minute to make it 2-2 and push the world champions to the brink.

Argentina finally found a way through in the 111th minute when Cristian Romero's header deflected off Cape Verde defender Diney Borges and into his own net, sealing a 3-2 victory. Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, 40, was a standout performer throughout, repeatedly denying Messi and company to keep his side in the contest deep into extra time. Argentina advance to face Egypt in the Round of 16.
