Egypt reached the World Cup knockout stages for the first time in their history, outlasting Australia 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Emam Ashour headed Egypt in front in the 13th minute, meeting a Karim Hafez delivery unmarked, before Mohamed Hany turned an in-swinging free-kick into his own net under pressure in the 55th minute to level the score for Australia.

Both sides had chances to win it in normal time. Patrick Beach produced a crucial save to deny a Ramy Rabia header deep into stoppage time, and the match went to a scoreless extra time before moving to penalties. Australia head coach Tony Popovic made a bold late change, replacing 22-year-old goalkeeper Patrick Beach with 34-year-old veteran Mathew Ryan specifically for the shootout.

The swap did not pay off. Harry Souttar blazed his opening spot kick over the crossbar and Lucas Herrington also missed, while Egypt converted all four of their attempts. Mohamed Salah, playing through a hamstring issue, chipped a Panenka down the middle, and Hossam Abdelmaguid struck the decisive winning penalty to send Egypt through to a first-ever World Cup quarter-final meeting against the winner of Argentina and Cabo Verde.
