Colombia 1-0 Ghana: Arias strike sends Los Cafeteros through, Ghana fail to register a shot

Colombia beat Ghana 1-0 in the Round of 32 at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City to advance to face Switzerland in the last 16. The only goal came in the 14th minute when substitute Luis Suárez crossed for Jhon Arias, who side-footed home at the far post to give Colombia the lead they would not relinquish. The match was played in extreme heat, with officials warning of a heat index near 101 degrees.

Colombia dominated for the remainder of the game, racking up shots and chances while Ghana rarely threatened in attack. Luis Díaz had a goal ruled out for offside and also hit the side netting after getting in behind the Ghana defence, while goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi made several important saves to keep the deficit at one goal. Both sides were disrupted by early injuries, with Colombia's Jhon Córdoba and Ghana's Mohammed Salisu withdrawn inside the first 13 minutes.

Ghana were unable to muster a single shot across the full 90 minutes, an alarming attacking return that extended their scoreless, shotless run in the tournament. With Colombia holding a heavy expected-goals advantage over the course of the match, the single Arias goal proved more than enough to send Ghana home and book Colombia's place in the round of 16 against Switzerland in Vancouver.
